Sports roundup: basketball season kicks-off, swim team goes to Kalispell Invitational, and wrestling competes in Plains

Winter sports were in full swing last week as the Vikings and Valkyries basketball teams opened their season at the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown while swimming was at the Kalispell Invitational and wrestling competed in Plains.

VALKYRIES BASKETBALL

The Valkyries used a balanced scoring attack to pick up a pair of wins to open the season at the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown.

Bigfork got 15 from freshman Ava Davey and 13 from senior Emma Berreth Friday as the Valkyries cruised past Kellogg (Idaho) 62-41.

Bigfork jumped out to a 7-0 lead and outscored Kellogg 15-2 in the third quarter en route to the win.

Braeden Gunlock and Scout Nadeau also scored in double figures for the Valkyries with 12 each.

The Valkyries trailed 18-16 after one quarter against Butte Central Saturday before outscoring the Maroons 39-12 over the next two quarters to pull away for a 64-48 victory.

Bigfork had three players scoring in double figures, led by Gunlock with 19 while Berrerth had 17 and Nadeau added 12.

The Valkyries were back in action after print time Tuesday at home against Mission and will play at Eureka Thursday. Bigfork hosts Florence-Carlton Saturday before traveling to face Columbia Falls Monday.

VIKINGS BASKETBALL

The Vikings basketball season got off to a rough start at the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown over the weekend as Bigfork fell to Kellogg and Butte Central.

Bigfork trailed 14-10 after one quarter against Kellogg Friday and cut the lead to 22-20 at the half before Kellogg pulled away in the third quarter to down the Vikings 51-42.

Colin Wade and Wyatt Johnson each scored eight to lead the Vikings while Isak Epperly had seven points and George Brown added six.

Butte Central jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter against the Vikings Saturday and Bigfork would never recover as the Maroons picked up the win, 46-37.

Wade was the only Viking in double figures with 11 points while Wyatt Johnson and Epperly each scored five.

The Vikings were at Mission after press time Tuesday and will host Eureka Thursday, Florence-Carlton Saturday and Columbia Falls Monday.

WRESTLING

The Vikings wrestling squad was in action in Plains Thursday as they took on the host team as well as Arlee and Eureka in a quad meet.

Traic Fainter won both his matches by fall to lead the way for the Vikings while Angus Anderson and Evan Tidwell also picked up wins via pin.

Anderson pinned Arlee’s Tyrel Thomas in 40 seconds as Bigfork defeated Arlee 48-18 and Fainter took down Plains/Hot Springs wrestler August Courville in 1:01 as the Vikings tied the Savage Horsemen 27-27.

Fainter pinned Eureka’s Blake Lancaster in 3:12 and Diego Rodriguez earned an 8-3 decision over Gavin Schrenk, but it was not enough as the Lions picked up the victory, 42-39.

The Vikings were at Libby after press time Tuesday and will compete at the Buzz Lucey Invitational in Eureka Friday and Saturday. Bigfork will host a home mixer Tuesday, Dec. 21 beginning at 5 p.m.

VALKYRIES SWIMMING

The Valkyries swim team was in action at the Summit in Kalispell Saturday as Bigfork swam its way to a fourth-place finish.

Sophi Logue led the way for Bigfork with wins in the 200 individual medley (2:23.87) and the 50 freestyle (27.29) while Sydney Slawter took second in the 50 freestyle (27.64).

Bigfork’s relay teams also had a strong showing, taking third in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle races.

The team will be back in action Saturday at the Missoula Meet.
