The Glacier Fund recently received information from the Montana State Department of Motor Vehicles regarding the top ten selling specialty license plates. We were very pleased to find out that The Glacier Plate is currently the second best selling plate in Montana.

Lookout life has its ups and downs

Matthew Ward has either got one of those dream jobs or something close to a nightmare. I'm not sure which. He's spending the summer at the Prairie Reef Lookout in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. It's the highest lookout in Montana. Glacier's Mount Brown Lookout, for what it's worth, is actually a few hundred feet lower.

This might be the hardest working team Greg Trenerry has ever coached. That looks to be a good sign for this year's girl's soccer team.

Local group's 'top gun' has green ties

Isn't it great? Citizens For A Better Flathead has brought in a new "top gun" from Humbolt County, Calif., to set us Montana hicks straight. Our newest, fastest "green" gun is named Brian Mau. Here is what a Humbolt County newspaper, the Arcata Eye, had to say about "gunslinger" Mau after he gained control of the local county Democrat party (6/17/03): "In recent years the Humbolt Democratic Party has shifted left and could be called 'Green Party light.' Their philosophies reflect their new chair Brian Mau, who is a former Green Party member." An anti-property rights Humbolt County green group calling itself the Humbolt Organization for People and the Environment (HOPE), rejoiced at the event, stating in their May 2003 newsletter: "The local Demos now too have a Chairman Mau." With these rousing endorsements, the out-of-state green tax-exempt foundations that give CFBF their marching orders have chosen their new director well. With the import of Chairman Mau, it appears that for the green machine, amateur hour in the Flathead is now over.

Reverse mortgages can help senior citizens

It breaks my heart to think about our senior citizens who have to choose between groceries, medication or pet food because they live on a fixed income in an area where property taxes have grown so high. So many of these seniors live in houses that have appreciated substantially, yet they can't afford the taxes and utilities. I wonder how many seniors have heard of reverse mortgages?

Many of us who are Christians are afraid of the culture around us and have hidden ourselves within the walls of our institutions. Our expressed personal testimony, historical heritage, and joy in knowing Jesus Christ as Lord is suffering from lack of zeal, understanding, and reasoned persuasion. Politics and democratic values are threatening our faithfulness to Christian service. Have we substituted the gospel of Christianity with government and frightful allusions of political solutions for our moral concerns?

Ten years ago, I bought a 1964 Dodge Coronet for a dollar and left Vail, Colorado in search of a new town, fresh snow, and real people. A few calls to various businesses in Whitefish led me into a conversation with Chris Hayatt, who was opening Ski Mountain Sports that winter. I told him about my experience tuning skis and he told me if I showed up, he'd put me to work. To me, it sounded like there were good people in this frontier town.

The definition of 'nothing wrong'

Luke Cassady and Ansel Vizcaya were killed by an avalanche on June 12th this year while climbing Mt. Rainier. Both were well known mountaineers from Missoula. They were attempting an ascent of Rainier's north face via the difficult ice and rock of Liberty Ridge. Both the bodies were recovered; Cassady's within a couple of days and Vizcaya after the snow had melted more. Both men were 29 years old. Cassady taught in the math and neuroscience department at the University of Montana.

The currents of change in political philosophy are nowhere more vividly illustrated than in the history of Montana's major environmental protection law, MEPA-the Montana Environmental Policy Act. Originally conceived and passed by Republicans and opposed by many Democrats, it is now embraced by Democrats and opposed by most Republicans. Indeed, even the major national environmental protection laws were initiated in Republican administrations in the 1970s.

There is definitely a hazard in writing a column like this one for over 40 years. As you know, a major source of subjects are incidents from my own life such as the awful time at Flathead Mine in the late thirties when I took a bath and then they called off the dance. There are hundreds of other things, like my driving to Butte to give a speech and then finding out the convention was in Missoula. I have on occasion deliberately reworked and repeated columns and at other times innocently told a story without remembering I had done it before.
