Letters to the editor May 30
As graduation nears, it is always interesting to read the profiles of a few select seniors. However, I would like to suggest that the Inter Lake staff broaden the scope to feature students who have struggled to get through school. Having worked in schools for several years, I am very aware of the high number of kids who struggle to merely attend. Many do not even know where they will spend the night, yet manage to get themselves to school every day. Many have had to assume the parental role in their families, often because of parental neglect. Others have lost parents or siblings due to causes ranging from accidents to suicide. They still find the strength and commitment to attend and complete school.

Even more, perhaps it’s the activities like skiing on Big Mountain, snowmobiling on the Flathead National Forest or fishing on Flathead Lake or the dozens of other lakes in the region.

Years after Standing Rock, scars of protest remain
For more than a year between 2016 and 2017, thousands of people crowded into three protests camps in North Dakota. Ostensibly, they were there to halt construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The reality was more complex, bringing together environmentalists, Native American activists, members of Black Lives Matter and sympathetic citizens. Area residents saw it all up close: both the rituals and prayer, and the blocking of roads and violence. Today, the camp is gone but the scars remain.

Free lunch, not free enterprise
I suppose I shouldn’t be any more surprised than most taxpaying Americans to discover that I paid more in income taxes in 2018 than the behemoth retailer Amazon.com; but then I didn’t have a net profit of $11.2 billion, either. Nor did I get anything close to Amazon’s $128 million tax refund for 2018. This is the second consecutive year that Amazon has not paid federal income taxes. “Remember the Maine!” Does anyone? The Maine was a battleship harbored in Havana in 1898 that unexpectedly exploded, possibly by radicals. Immediately, with the help of William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper publisher who invented that famous slogan advocating retaliation, we declared war and conquered Cuba, and then the Philippines. When asked why we decided to invade the Philippines, 5,000 miles away, President McKinley was dumbfounded. So, he declared “...to Christianize it.”, even though Filipinos had been worshipping Christ for several hundred years.

True story of 18th century martyred nuns
“Dialogues des Carmelites” (“Dialogues of the Carmelites”) is based on the true story of 16 Carmelite nuns and lay sisters who martyred themselves during the French Revolution instead of renouncing their vows. The opera is set between 1789 and 1794 in both Paris and the town of Compiegne in northeast France, the site of the nun’s convent. Like many operas, “Dialogues des Carmelites” features friendship, purity, sacrifice, love, rejection, aspiration and spirituality, but this opera ties together these elements in a unique way. In fact, Opera News rates the finale as the most stunning moment of spirituality in all of opera. The nuns sing the fervent prayer “Salve Regina,” and one by one they are taken offstage and killed, the whack of the guillotine punctuating the music. The nuns’ voices are reduced in number one by one until there is only one sister left, and then none.
