Kats thump Dogs to take conference lead
How sweet it is.
The Columbia Falls girls soccer team blanked Whitefish last week to take the lead in the Western A conference last Thursday.
The Cats then dropped Polson away in non-conference action 8-1, and then followed up with a win against Bigfork.
Against Whitefish, the Kats scored first on a shot by Kim Pearce at the 10-minute mark and then Lisa Carter scored on a breakaway 45 minutes into the game. The Kats outshot Whitefish 11-5 and had nine corner kicks to the Dogs three.
The Kats looked strong against Bigfork Tuesday afternoon, picking up another conference win, 6-2. Lindsay Henning and Amber Lampman scored for the Kats, and Carter and Pearce picked up two goals apiece.
Carter now has 19 goals for the season. The girls are alone at the top of the league heading into the last week of the regular season.
At Polson, the Kats put on a clinic. Carter had four goals, Pearce had three and Vanessa Almanza had a goal as well. Almanza normally plays goalie.
The wins put the Kats at 8-2 overall and 4-0 in conference.
Coach Greg Trenerry was pleased with the girls' play, particularly against Whitefish.
"That was our best game of the year," he said. He said Pearce and Carter are beginning to play well together. Pearce missed the first few games of the season with a leg injury and is wearing a brace.
The last time the Kats shutout the Dogs was two years ago, Trenerry said. Both Pearce and Carter scored the team's two goals then as well.
The Kats wrap up their regular season with a game against Libby away Friday and then face Whitefish next Tuesday (Oct. 12) at home. Game times are 5:30 Friday and 4:30 Tuesday.
The goal is pretty simple, Trenerry said. Win all of the games from here on out.
A conference crown assures a first round playoff game at home against the third place team from the east. The team is looking for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
