Annexation decision should yield orderly growth for Whitefish

The Montana Supreme Court's decision Tuesday to side with the city of Whitefish in a long-running legal battle over annexation is certainly a key victory for the city, one that should ultimately mean more orderly growth for Whitefish.

It's no doubt disheartening, however, for the 270 or so property owners represented in a consolidated lawsuit against the city. The city promises benefits such as a resort tax property-tax rebate, lower fees for city services and the whole package of services that includes law enforcement, fire protection and road maintenance for those who will be annexed.

Newly annexed residents can expect to pay 10 to 15 percent more in taxes, but being a city resident shouldn't have to be a burden for anyone. Annexation buys a voice in how city government operates.

Annexation is one of those inevitable signs of the times for residents in high-growth areas. It shouldn't be perceived as a land grab by the city, but rather a way for Whitefish to have more control over its own destiny.
