Stanley Lee Dye died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at the Edgewood Vista residence in Kalispell.
Tennis champ awarded by tennis legend
Whitefish High School tennis player Danni Paulson is one of two people to win the 2005 Novo Nordisk Donnelly awards.
The Montana Expresso in the Safeway parking lot was started in 1993 by Keri Jo "KJ" Knutson.
KJ was a beloved high school girls soccer coach for two seasons, 1994-1996. She is described by one former player as having a benevolent disposition and vivacity that were contagious.
After reading the articles in the July 16 edition of the Whitefish Pilot regarding recreational use on Spencer Mountain, I have to come to the following conclusions and observations:
I have nothing against multiple-use on public lands, but the acreage within Spencer Mountain is in danger of being loved to death.
In response to Joseph Coco Jr.'s letter about "Amtrak Economics," I would like to make some points.
First, every form of transportation that Amtrak competes with is subsidized by our government. The government built and maintains the highway system, while the airlines enjoy direct subsidies and guaranteed loans. This is in no way a free-market competition. Why should only Amtrak have to pay its own way?
Please visit the new Whitefish City Beach Neighborhood Association Web site www.whitefishcbn.org.
We would like to invite everyone for input no matter what neighborhood you are in to help get us going. Everyone in the City Beach area should participate. I suggest that it officially include anyone along Washington, Woodland, Lakeside and Oregon as a start.
The Glacier United U-12 boys and girls teams dominated the Montana State Cup in Kalispell this past weekend, winning their divisions.
The U-12 boys team, coached by Peter Steele and Gary Danczyk, came out of Saturday's games with a 1-1 record — a 6-2 loss to the Missoula Strikers Red team and a solid win against the Helena Arsenal Gold.
Montanans have gained a national reputation for their steadfast protection of privacy and property rights.
That means it's not likely a city government here will condemn someone's home to make room for a private business, as the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed.

Softball Wildkats fare well in Polson
This weekend in the Polson ASA Splash Classic the traveling team from Columbia Falls won their second tournament trophy in two weeks. The team, composed of 13 and 14-year-old girls who competed in the Columbia Falls Youth Softball Association recreational league, were competing in their second tournament this year. The competition this week included all-star teams who have played in up to 10 tournaments already this year, and who have played together since they were 10 Us from Missoula, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, Polson, Libby and Frenchtown.
Tip wasn't warranted
I write in response to the Eagle's bestowing upon The Milhous Group the weekly congratulatory "Tip of the Hat." The column indicates that it was granted because Milhous "opted" to suspend their construction project on Electric Avenue until after Labor Day and to sod their new empty lot (where the Painted Horse previously existed) and provide three parking spaces during the Summer.
Stephen "Winnebago" Clement Joubert
Stephen "Winnebago" Clement Joubert, 63, of Hungry Horse, passed away June 9, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital in Helena of liver disease. He was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Boston.
Baucus has a responsibility
Without so much as a friendly "good luck to you" from ranking Democrat Max Baucus, the Senate Finance Committee has endeavored to craft a Social Security reform bill that will keep America's invaluable retirement program solvent and strong for future generations.
Bear talk
Montanans For Multiple Use invites the public to attend its July 19 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Fish Wildlife and Parks Building, 800 Meridian Road across from the Fairgrounds in Kalispell. Chris Servheen, the biologist leading the grizzly bear recovery project, will be the guest speaker. Servheen will provide updates on the latest grizzly bear research and recommendations for future bear population and habitat management needs, especially for the Flathead portion of the Northern Continental Divide Grizzly Habitat Ecosystem.

Staking a claim
Depending upon who you are, these could be the worst of times or the best of times.
With pride
Thank you VFW Post 4042 for the most inspiring Memorial Day service ever. We watched with pride as your proud VFW members, in dark pants, white crisp shirts and blue vests edged in gold trim, marched up and stood at dedicated attention as guest speakers and officers of the VFW spoke. They reminded us of all the years of service and sacrifice that make Memorial Day so meaningful to all of us.
A long ago mistake
Exactly one year ago we read about a young George Ostrom editing a school newspaper at the Flathead Mine in 1941. Remember?
Skate park safety
The town of Whitefish has learned to accept the idea of a skateboard park. However, a skateboard park needs to have a safe way for kids to get there.
In appreciation
To all who have given of their money, time, effort knowledge and skills, a heart-felt thank you from the president of Bigfork Youth Baseball. Over the past three years, we have seen a large increase in the "off-the-field help." For those who show up to the field clean-up day in early spring, help with fund-raisers, participate in the opening day ceremonies, donate use of equipment, prepare the fields before games and clean up after games. Closing day ceremonies this year was a particularly successful event. It was our annual picnic and raffle drawing. Volunteers set up tents, table, chairs and food for 300 plus attendees in an hour and a half. Even more impressive was the tear down in 37 minutes! With this type of help, it allows the managers and coaches time to work directly with the kids and concentrate on teaching them the great game of baseball.
Richard Forsyth
In loving memory of our husband, father and grandfather Richard "Dick" Steven Forsyth, age 80, of Spokane, Wash., who passed away June 16, 2005.

Justin Conklin
Justin Conklin died the morning of Monday, June 13, 2005 at the age of 19.
Larry L. Schmautz, passed away suddenly at his home in Columbia Falls on June 18, 2005.
Larry left this life too early, but he touched so many lives. Larry will be remembered as a gentle-hearted father, husband, grandfather, coach, teacher, friend and mentor.
Respect
In the week following Memorial weekend our papers showed more sports of different kinds on the front pages than what they should have. Have we forgotten why we have holidays such as Memorial Day and the 4th of July to name a couple?
Floyd Bud Mitchell
Floyd Bud Mitchell, 87, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the North Valley Hospital in Whitefish.
Wolf Creek exits into the past
Once upon a time major highways that crisscross the United States went through the center of large and small towns. To the local inhabitants this was Main Street and their shopping district.
In need
Please help spread the word throughout our community that the Flathead Food Bank is in need of volunteers this summer. Summer is a very difficult time for the Flathead Food Bank's five pantries because donations sharply decrease and volunteers go on vacations or simply want to enjoy the summer with their families. This leads the food banks in quite a bind.

Used to be you could cruise down the highway and glance at a passing car and know right away what state it was from.
A plateful
Passing meaningless ordinances is not only costly, but places an annoyance on the community you represent.
The Whitefish City Code 4-2-4A places every residence in violation of garbage containment whether it is out in the street or on the premises. The only exception being garbage stored in an odor-free bear-proof container.

(I know, I know what you're thinking. Didn't someone steal your last pack from the back of your truck? Didn't you learn anything? The answer of course, is yes, and no. I learned you can leave your pack in the back of the truck, just as long as you sit in the restaurant window, so you can keep an eye on the pack. Of course, if the waitress is good looking, all bets are off.)
