Disappointed
For the past few years the veterans around town have been very disappointed in the recognition given for Memorial Day and Fourth of July.
The very little coverage that is received it pitiful, and disrespectful. Because of these holidays, you are able to publish a paper, for people to read.
Memorial Day is observed to honor the veterans who have served and died for our country. When a veteran dies their coffin is draped with a flag not a kayak.
The picture published this last week of the Memorial Day service was a disgrace. The Whitewater festival had the front page and color pictures.
The Memorial Day service had a small worthless caption and a black and white picture on the fifth page.
Shouldn't we all be remembering why we celebrate this holiday?
Last year for the Fourth of July, there were better pictures published of fire trucks and floats than what was published for the honor guard at the head of the parade carrying the flag.
The Fourth of July, celebrates the beginning of our country. The parades and fireworks are fun to watch, and give everyone another day off of work. But we again need to remember why we get a day to relax.
The American flag should be recognized as the reason for these holidays. We need to make sure this generation understands the meaning of it all. If they don't understand why we celebrate these holidays, in years to come the meaning is going to be lost even more than it is now.
I am a fourth-generation veteran, stemming back to WW I, and was raised on the belief of patriotism and standing firm on what you believe.
For the last four years I have been a proud member of VFW Post 4042 and valued the opportunity to serve this great country.
These holidays should be about pride, honor and sorrow for the prices paid for our freedoms!
