Kudos to Sen. Baucus

e're happy to see that Senator Max Baucus is pushing for Going-to-the-Sun Highway funding in the upcoming six-year highway transportation bill.

Someone had to.

Congressman Denny Rehberg wasn't able to earmark any funding for the Sun Highway in the House version of the bill, even though he sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. The bottom line is Rehberg didn't get the job done for a national treasure - Glacier National Park.

In fact, Rehberg was calling for the Senate in late April to not tinker with the bill for fear it wouldn't pass. Last year the bill failed because it was too laden with pork and the President promised to veto it.

But the Sun Highway isn't pork. Far from it.

If the Senate, with the direction of Sen. Baucus can secure funding for the Sun Highway in one way shape or form, then it is certainly worth the wait.

We've said this before and we'll say it again: The Sun Highway is the lifeblood of the summer economy here. It's that simple. We need to fix it and stop the political posturing.
