Ben Parsons, 25, and Claire Anderson, 21, were king and queen of the mountain with time of 37:18 and 44:57 the Big Mountain Hill Run on Saturday. A total fo 73 runners competed, with Henery Holt, 9, the youngest, at 72:32, and Ted and Joan Winchel, both 70, the oldest, with times of 70:00 and 69:33. Proceeds from the event went to the Glacier Nordic Ski Team.

More than 50 participants of all ages entered the Third Annual Whitefish Friends and Family Run/Walk. The Whitefish Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab credited the participants, sponsors and volunteers for making it a success. Proceeds go to the Child Development Center. Top finishers included: 14 and under 5K male, Thomas Hopkins Jr., 24:52; 14 and under 5K female, Kate Hopkins, 30:40; 14 and under 10K male, Cody Rose, 1:05:58; men's 5K, Thomas Hopkins Sr., 24:40; women's 5K, Betsi Morrison, 24:42; 70 years and older 5K, Lea Bechtold, 43:00; men's 10K, Paul Soukup, 45:30; women's 10K, Linda Vevera, 45:48.

Keith Coleman, from the Harbour Pointe golf course in Mukilteo, Wash., came from two strokes behind to beat number two Jeff Coston, from the Semiahmoo golf course in Seattle, to win the Pacific Northwest PGA Club Professional Championship held at Whitefish Lake Golf Course on Aug. 24. Keith shot a three-round 201 on the par 71, 6,563-yard course and took home $3,000 of the $30,025 purse. Montana golfers who placed include Eagle Bend golf pro Lon Hinkle at third place and Village Greens golf pro Ryan Malby, who tied with two others at 11th place. Jason Lehtola, of Hamilton, and Christine Newton, of Whitefish, tied with two others at 24th place.

The Whitefish Lake Golf Club Fall Pro-Am, scheduled for Sept. 17-18, is one of the biggest such events in the area each year, with teams from around the Northwest U.S. and Canada attending. Local members of WLGA are invited to register to be a participant on one of the visiting teams during the Sept. 17-18 tournament. The local golf professionals will also all have teams participating.

The Whitefish Lake Golf Course will host the Class A State golf tournament on Oct. 6-7. Anyone interested in serving as a scorer with one of the high school groups should call either coach Terry Nelson to volunteer. This is a fun volunteer job, and you get to watch some excellent golf as well. The time commitment for either one or both days is around five hours from start to finish.

The Sawbuck Do Jang martial art studio, located inside the Downtowner Motel in Whitefish, will hold a demonstration by children and teenagers on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The studio practices Soo Bahk Do, a traditional Korean martial art that emphasizes philosophy, tradition, and respect. Andy Hamer, with the help of his students, will demonstrate ancient martial art techniques to show their beauty and longevity and share some of the history and potency of Soo Bahk Do.
