John Otis Horne
John Otis Horne (Hoare) passed away in his home in Bigfork, Saturday, April 22, 2006. Jack was born on Dec. 11, 1917 in Corning, N.Y., the only child of Dora Evans and John S. Hoare.
Although having lost his father at a young age, Jack had a wonderful boyhood growing up in Wellsborough, Penn., with fond memories of his grandfather Otis Evans' car dealership and service garage, Pleasant Valley Winery, the village of Hammondsport in New York and the many adventures boating on Keuka Lake. Jack was always surrounded by the love of his mother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Jack graduated from Wellsborough High School in 1935 and from Penn State Class of '39 with a degree in Industrial Engineering (even Jack was not sure why he chose this field). At Penn State he formed several lifelong friendships with Phi Kappa Psi brothers, whom he treasured.
Jack met and married Louise Kerckhoff Yuong, a second generation-born Los Angelino (California), shortly before enlisting in the US Navy where he was commissioned an officer and served until 1945. After honorable discharge from the service, Jack settled in Los Angeles with Louise while working and going to school at night to become a Certified Public Accountant, and where he and Louise and their two children lived until 1970 when they moved to a home on the water in Huntington Harbor, south of Los Angeles. Jack retired shortly afterward. In 1992, Louise and Jack moved near Flathead Lake and their daughter in Bigfork.
A devoted husband of 61 years, Jack was intelligent, generous, loving and kind, a truly "gentle" man. Jack is survived by his daughter, Linda Mogolis of Bigfork, and his son, James Horne and wife Ruthanne, of Tustin, Calif., cousin Janet Evans Owlett and husband, Ted and family of Wellsboro, Penn., cousin Caroline Champlin Chamberlain, of Mass., and family, grandson, John Mogolis and wife Julie, and great-grandson Gunnar of Eagle, Idaho, and many other family and friends who will miss him greatly.
Honoring Jack's wishes, cremation has taken place under the care of Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Jack's name to Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, Rt 54, Hammondsport NY 14840. (Access available on-line).
