Cub Scouts hold 2nd Annual Pinewood Derby

Bigfork Cub Scout pack No. 23’s 2nd Annual Pinewood Derby had engines revving — well, at least the scouts’ spirits and energy were high March 29 in the Bethany Lutheran Church’s Ark building.

Twenty pinewood cars raced down the track, which was purchased in cooperation with the Lakeside Cub Scouts. Scouts made their cars with help from parents and family members. Most chose their own paint scheme though.

“I like the colors of the flag,” Tate Chenard said of his red, white and blue car. Chenard took second in this year’s derby.

Shane Rieke’s No. 36 car won him first place, while Mason Bruch was third.

The Show and Shine Award, voted on by fellow Cub Scouts, went to Keegan Driver. His No. 246 car resembled an open-wheel formula one car with a blue paint job and flames.

Cub Master Sarah Driver said the scouts, grades 1-5, could make any last-minute adjustments and repairs to their cars at the “garage” table set up. All the cars had to weigh five oz. or less to race in the derby.

Family members raced their cars in an open class race. Samantha Rieke won that race, even beating the winning Cub Scout car.

Door prizes were also given away at the derby — all donated and with race car themes.

Any boys or parents interested in their son joining Cub Scouts (grades 1-5) can call Cub Master Sarah Driver at 837-3666 for more information.
