Loggers on fire at Twins opener

Steve Bertelsen, shortstop for the Libby Loggers, was unstoppable anytime he felt like stealing a base from the Glacier Twins last Thursday.

Bertelsen stole three bases. He also went 3-for-3 with five RBIs in helping the Loggers win 11-2 in the Western conference A opener June 7 in Libby. Even Twins coach Lindsay Fansler was impressed with Bertelsen’s performance.

“He’s a great athlete,” Fansler said. “He just had a good day all around, and you have to tip your hat to someone like that.”

Although the final score didn’t reflect it, Fansler thought his team performed fairly well.

“We hung with them for a while, going into the sixth, but we hit a couple players and they took advantage of that,” he said. “Libby just put together a great game defensively. We didn’t have any errors, they were just swinging great all around.”

Bertelsen also belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give Libby a 3-2 lead. That marked the end of any scoring possibilities for the Twins, as Loggers pitcher Derek Benefield pitched eight consecutive scoreless innings.

Sean Sagen provided the only offensive spark for the Twins, with three hits and a stolen base. The Libby defense kept the Twins off the scoreboard, and their offense blew it wide open in the sixth inning, scoring five times to take a 10-2 lead.
