Enjoy the farmers markets

| June 21, 2007 11:00 PM

It's that time of year again and the farmer's markets are open for business. Some of them have been open for a couple of weeks already, and Whitefish can boast two, both of which are easily accessible and conveniently timed — Tuesday downtown from 5-7 p.m. and Thursday at the Pin and Cue from 4-6 p.m.

Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb seems to be the order of the day and quite abundant here in the valley. According to Prairie Home Companion, it's good for just about everything. Sauce and pies seem to be the most popular items, but a savory compote goes well with meats and other dishes and keeps pretty well too.

Several of the vendors have early spring greens bagged up and ready to eat, and most have potting plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs for you to grow in your gardens (or on a desk in a pot if you have a deer problem).

Cut flowers and hanging baskets were also in evidence. The Tuesday market has music and prepared-food vendors and a wide assortment of craft vendors and artists.

As different crops come in season, look for a small selection of recipes and suggestions at the market.

And please remember to bring your recyclable bags and other containers for shopping. I actually have a note taped to my dashboard, because it's easy to forget to take bags either at the supermarket or the farmers market.

Buy fresh, buy local — it's good for everybody. Happy shopping and eating.
