Whittaker takes title

There’s no denying Andrew Whittaker is fast.
Nicknamed “The Gazelle” during football season, the name is fitting for the new Montana Class A 100-meter dash champion.
Whittaker tied for first with Scott Palmer of Columbia Falls in heat one of the 100 time trials with a time of 11.35 seconds May 25 in Missoula. His time qualified him for the 100-meter finals the following day.
“It just kind of happened,” Whittaker said of his good running. His time in the finals, 11.26, was almost 10 tenths of a second faster than his finish in the time trials and more than 30 tenths of a second faster than his third-place finish at the Northwest A Divisional track meet.
“I knew he had a shot at placing,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. “I knew he’d be right in it.”
Whittaker edged out Dawson County’s Derek Ohs for first in the finals. Whittaker was one second faster than Ohs.
“He kind of passed me and I ran faster after that. I knew it was either first or second,” Whittaker said of his finish. “The wait was hard. They were looking at the video over and over again.”
Whittaker said he hopes to return to the state track and field meet next year to defend his title.
Whittaker also ran on the Vikes’ 400-meter relay team. The team — Dustin Haines, Keenan Evans, Forrest Schiltz and Whittaker — finished fifth in the trials with a time of 44.91 seconds. The relay team did not place.
“I thought we ran good,” Whittaker said. “We cut our best time down by a second.”
Donny Tudahl may have used his best at the divisional meet to qualify for state, as he scratched on all three of his throws.
“He threw out of bounds,” Bigfork coach Nate Hammond said. He added that because Tudahl is a sophomore, he expects him to be able to qualify for state again in the future.
