Getts-Maynard doubles team gets tennis win for Wildcats

The Columbia Falls boys changed their tennis lineup and got a win against Polson, but the girls were blanked by the Pirates last week and lost to Glacier on Tuesday.

Boys coach Gary Yee said prior to the match he would likely switch his lineup. He paired Grant Getts and Cody Maynard, who made it to state last year, and they got the lone win against Polson, downing Matt and Steven Roberts, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6.

Yee said the thrust of this season is to get as many players into state action as possible. Maynard was teamed up with George Kimerly earlier this season and Jake Ronish was paired up with Getts.

Both Ronish and Kimerly played singles against the Pirates, and lost. This is Kimerly's first year as a tennis player. He's known more for his ability as a goalie in soccer.

On the girls side, Sarah Marcille took Mattea York to three sets but lost, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3.

The big plus for the program is that the new tennis courts are completely installed.

The courts went in last week, completed by SnapSports of Salt Lake City, Utah. The courts cost about $100,000 with the city footing most of the bill. The school contributed $12,000, the Wildcat Endowment $4,000 and fundraisers another $385, city finance Director Susan Nicosia said.

The Rotary Club is also raising funds to pave the driveway and make the courts handicapped-accessible. In addition, the city now has a tennis program, where folks can come to city hall, put down a deposit, and get a racket and balls. They then just return the gear and get the deposit back. That program is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week.

One court can also be converted to an outdoor volleyball court.
