Approving bond is our duty
This March, the Whitefish School District is asking voters to pass a $21.5 million bond for Whitefish High School.
The plan for the school is a combination of new construction and modernization of existing facilities.
As seen by the majority of the community attending a school function or ball game, the lobby area and gymnasium we see look pretty nice, and indeed they are. However, when you venture down to C-wing, which holds nearly 60 percent of the school's classrooms, the library and computer labs, you will find classrooms that are out-of-date and overcrowded by any standards, hallways that are narrow and congested, and restrooms that are inadequate.
Even the more modern areas of the school have out-of-date electrical systems and don't provide sufficient areas for science labs.
Don't just take my word for it, please show up for the scheduled school tours on March 13 where you will learn more about the proposed bond and see the actual classrooms.
You will also listen to teachers discuss the impact the tired building has on the education process and how the new school would not only benefit current teachers and students, but the teachers we hire in 5-10 years who will be trained with new methods of teaching and technology that cannot be used in the existing building.
I was fortunate to grow up here and attend Whitefish High School. When I attended college, I saw first-hand that I was better prepared for the classes and the real world because of the education I received at Whitefish High School.
I feel it is now my responsibility to continue this tradition and to make sure that the next generation of Whitefish High School students can receive the highest level of education in a safe facility that continues to attract the quality of teachers we have come to expect here in Whitefish.
If you feel the same way, please vote yes on your mail-in ballot.
