Get the facts on high school

Five years ago, when we had a chance to move to Whitefish from Missoula, one of the first things we considered was the quality of the school system. It was important to us because we had young children but also because we felt it was a great barometer of community. We both grew up on Montana's "Hi Line," where schools are the center of the communities.

We were pleased to find a contemporary elementary school and plans in place to modernize the middle school. It seemed logical that the high school would soon follow. That time is upon us now.

The possibility of a remodel of the oldest part of the school ("C-Wing") has been duly considered by many over the course of several years. The fundamental issue is converting a 50-year-old building to a modern educational facility.

Today's differentiated-learning techniques require larger classrooms. How can we make classrooms larger, hallways wider in a cinder block building? Walls are not easily moved, and ceilings not easily raised.

We suggest that the cost of remodeling a currently inadequate space would near the proposed cost of new construction. And what remains is still a 50-year-old structure. This seems like an alternative that throws good money after bad.
