A plane crash killed a 50-year-old Whitefish man Wednesday, rescuers discovered, after a satellite picked up a signal from an emergency locator transmitter Wednesday afternoon in Western Montana, according to the Flathead County Sheriff's office. Hugh Rogers of Whitefish was the pilot, the Sheriff's Office said in a press release at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Rescuers found the wreckage of a small, single engine plane on the ice of Hungry Horse Reservoir at about 12:30 a.m. on April 2. Four members of search and rescue stayed with the victim until morning, when the body was transported to the Montana Crime Lab for an autopsy.
The crash occurred about 35 miles south of the Hungry Horse Dam.
The Sheriff's Office is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct an investigation.
