The Alpine Theatre Project will present “The World Goes ‘Round” at the Whitefish Middle School auditorium on Aug 20-23 with an evening of Broadway hits by composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. No one has written more showstoppers than Kander and Ebb, whose memorable songs include “All That Jazz,” “Maybe This Time,” “Cabaret,” “How Lucky Can You Get” and “New York, New York.” The World Goes ‘Round is a song and dance revue celebrating the most exciting duo in show biz history. The song and dance revue was directed by Betsi Morrison and choreographed by DJ Salisbury and stars Betsi Morrison, Aaron Ramey, Alexis Sims, Elisa Van Duyne and Luke Walrath. Whitefish Chamber of Commerce’s Gone Fishin’ social will be hosted by Grouse Mountain Lodge on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5-7 p.m. with food, refreshments, door prizes and live entertainment by John Floridis.

Glacier National Park centennial art and photography will be displayed at an open house hosted by the Glacier National Park Fund and the Glacier Association at 402 Ninth Street West in Columbia Falls on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 3-7 p.m. and at Glacier Park International Airport on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. Fourteen art pieces have been selected for the Park’s Centennial. In Columbia Falls, author C. W. Guthrie will sign her books “Glacier: The First 100 Years” and “Going to the Sun: Highway to the Sky,” and photographer Bret Bouda will sign his books “Glacier Park Wide” and “Glacier Classics.” Seventy images of the Park will be on display at the airport. The Bet Harim Jewish Community of the Flathead Valley will host its fourth annual mentor and humanitarian awards fundraiser — and carnival — at Haymoon Resort, 1845 Hodgson Road, 3.5 miles off U.S. Highway 93, on Aug. 20 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person for adults over-21. Saturday

The Stumptown Summer Hoedown, a family bluegrass event, will take place at the Whitefish Armory softball fields on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 2-10 p.m. Bands will include the national touring act Tony Furtado Trio, of Portland; LeftOver Biscuits, of Bigfork; Wise River Mercantile, of Missoula; Old Slouch Hat, of Kalispell; and D.J. Adobe Juan. Furtado, a banjo player, singer and songwriter, has played with Greg Allman, Taj Mahal, Keith Richards, Derek Trucks and Norah Jones and has a new album called “Deep Water.” Tickets are $20 at the gate, with children under-12 free, or available in advance at Second Street Pizza in Whitefish. A shuttle bus wll run between the pizza shop and the event from 5:30-10:30 p.m.

The Whitefish Community Foundation will host a community fair on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Depot Park. The fair will feature more than 20 nonprofit organizations, along with sports and artist clubs, from across the Flathead Valley. This will also be the last chance for people to adopt a yellow rubber duck for entry in the Foundation’s duck derby, which will take place the same day at 2:30 p.m. in the Whitefish River beginning at Riverside Park. Thousands of the ducks will be dumped into the river from the park’s footbridge. The race will end 150 yards away at the Baker Avenue bridge. All proceeds from the derby will go to the Foundation’s community grants fund. More than $10,000 in prizes will be handed out at an awards party following the derby at 5 p.m. in the O’Shaughnessy. Glacier Nordic Club in conjunction with Whitefish Mountain Resort will host the annual Big Mountain Run on Saturday, Aug. 22. The annual run is a fundraiser for the Flathead Valley’s Glacier Nordic Ski Team. Participants may walk, hike or run the 3.8-mile long Danny On Trail, climbing 2,200 vertical feet from the upper village area to the summit. Only event participants will be allowed to ride the lift down for free. Registration will take place from 8-9 a.m. at the Danny On trailhead near the Hellroaring Saloon. The race will start at 9:15 a,m. Registration is $10 individuals, $20 familes and $5 under-16. An awards ceremony will immediately follow the race on Summit House deck.

Sunday

The Whitefish Lake Swim will be held at Whitefish City Beach on Sunday, Aug. 23. Check-in will be at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9:15 a.m. Early registration is available at The Wave on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 5-7 p.m. There will be a half-mile and one-mile swim/ All participants must be 18 years old or older. All proceeds will benefit The Wave’s scholarship fund and the Wave Ryder Swim Team. For more information, call Holly at 862-5869.

Glacier National Park will host two “picnic in the park” events on Sunday, Aug. 23, to kick off its 100th birthday celebration. One picnic will take place on the lawn of the Lake McDonald Lodge, and the other will be at Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier. Both events will start at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Additional activities will start this fall and run into 2010, including a dance performance by the Wolf Trap Center of Performing Arts at the Whitefish Middle School auditorium on Nov. 17.

The Whitefish Downtown Farmers Market will feature innovative cellist Lee Zimmerman on Tuesday, Aug. 25. He is sponsored by Sarah Fitzgerald, of D.A. Davidson Co.
