It was a CNN report that inspired Laurie Pacheco, owner of Her Alibi Salon and Spa in Bigfork, to action.

A prestigious hair stylist, who typically charged $300 for a woman's cut, was offering free cuts for women who were struggling to find work so that they could have a better chance to get a job.

It made Pacheco think. Economic struggles are nearly all she's heard from clients at the salon lately and many have been talking about how to keep Christmas the same this year for their children.

"I've heard so many stories, seriously, so many stories of people really struggling," Pacheco said. "I know it's affected my family big time."

That's when she devised the plan. Pacheco and the four stylists at the salon will be offering free hair cuts to children up to age 16 on Monday, Dec. 21. From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. that day, the salon is inviting families that are struggling to bring in their children. No appointments will be made in advance.

"I'm always trying to think of kids more," Pacheco said. "This is such a family-oriented community. Everyone who comes in and is sitting across from us is talking about trying to keep Christmas as fun, festive and abundant as in years past. It's one more thing they don't have to pay for at this time of the year."

She chose this day since it's the first official day students are out of school for Winter Break.

"It's not a lot, but I think it helps make people feel better," Pacheco said.

This is the first time Pacheco has done something like this and she's not sure what to expect.

"I have no idea what's going to happen," Pacheco said. "I could easily have caused myself a circus."

There isn't much waiting room in Her Alibi, so Pacheco said if the lines get long, people might be standing outside.

To help, INVITE - American Kitchen and Bar will provide hot beverages to those waiting.

Pacheco said she hopes others in the Valley are looking for ways to help right now.

"I hope everybody out there is doing something," Pacheco said. "This is the only way I can think of to give back."

The salon is located at 456 Electric Avenue, Unit K (upstairs).

"I think it's going to be really neat," Pacheco said. "I hope a lot of smiles walk out the door."
