Former Whitefish finance director Mike Eve died Jan. 12 after a year-and-a-half battle with cancer. He was 49.

Eve joined the city staff in May 2000 after working seven years as the finance officer in Conrad.

He was diagnosed with stage-4 renal cell carcinoma in summer 2007. A CT scan revealed sizable growths on his liver and left kidney and nodules on both lungs.

Doctors at a Seattle hospital removed his kidney, but the growth had become entwined with major blood vessels and was inoperable. Doctors told him his cancer was incurable.

Eve continued to work at his job full-time even while he underwent cancer treatment. He retired from his job at City Hall the day after Christmas.

Former city manager Gary Marks left his job in Ketchum, Idaho, on Jan. 9 to spend some time with Eve . The two worked closely together during their time together at City Hall.

“He was the consummate professional and like a brother to me,” Marks said. “I’ll sorely miss him.”

Eve was named Government Worker of the Year in 2008 by the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce and was an active community leader. He is survived by his immediate family, wife Valerie and sons Dylan and Brandon.
