Discovery Regatta sets sail Saturday

| July 16, 2009 11:00 PM

On July 18, 2009 Discovery Developmental Center will again be "Sailing into the Future" in a benefit regatta hosted by the North Flathead Yacht Club. Join past and present friends and family of Discovery, members of the NFYC and families, and many other community families and businesses in this sixth annual benefit for Discovery.

The North Flathead Yacht Club location on the north shore of Flathead Lake is the venue. NFYC and other community sailors will be participating in a multiple race event. Race time begins at 9 a.m. and lasts throughout the morning, depending on winds. On shore, beginning at 11 a.m. there will be "Aloha Flathead" themed children's activities including a costume-making station, Aligator Alley, Tiki Torch relay rces, a Volcano toss, and two Treasure Hunts. A luncheon catered by Somers Bay Cafe begins at 12 p.m., and the Tropical Montana Marimba Ensemble will be playing from 1 to 4 p.m. Silent auction items are available for viewing and bidding until 3 p.m. Beer and wine concessions will also be available. Event tickets are $6 per person. Children 12 and under are free.

As part of the benefit, raffle tickets are being sold for the 4th Rubber Duck Regatta. Five hundred numbered tickets will be sold. Tickets that match the first two numbered ducks that reach the shore win $200 in cash each. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any Discovery staff, family, or board member. They will also be available at the lake the day of the event. Ducks will be dropped in the lake at 2 p.m.

This year, there is even more reason to come to Somers on Flathead Lake on July 18. For the first time, the Discovery Regatta will be the same day as the Lakeside Community Fair and the Somers Street Dance. Head to Flathead Lake early in the day to enjoy all that these family friendly events have to offer. And stay late! The Regatta party will be shutting down at 4:00 so we can exit the yacht club before the street gets closed down. A great opportunity to get a good parking spot!

All proceeds from the Regatta will be used to benefit Discovery and its programs. Discovery is a NAEYC accredited, licensed child care center, and has been serving children and families from around the Flathead Valley since 1992.

Founded by two pediatric therapists, Discovery's mission is to provide developmentally appropriate programming for children of all abilities in a professional environment. Annual fundraisers and benefit events such as the Regatta help ensure that tuition fees can remain accesible to most families in the Flathead Valley.

To get to the yacht club, take 93 South, turn left at the Somers sign, (and the Regatta signage boards and Somers Street Dance banner) and follow the signs. Bring your family and friends for this summer event full of water, food, music, and fun! For more information about the Regatta or either of the two organizations, please call Collette Box at Discovery Developmental Center (756-7295) or Ellen Ballerstein from NFYC (270-0737). Discovery is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
