Lady Dogs down Copperheads

The Whitefish High School softball team blew the doors off the Anaconda Lady Copperheads last Thursday 14-7 in blizzard conditions.

Shannon Holmes had three hits for the Lady Bulldogs, and Kaitlyn Wehrli, Madison Tveidt, Hailey Mortensen and Heather Bailey each had two. Kristi Whisler, Carolyn Sharpe and Madison Cross each had one hit.

"A lot of light bulbs are starting to go off," head coach Alan Compton said the next day. "We were just hitting better in that game — it's as simple as that. I think the (blizzard weather), that's part of what got us through yesterday. It's been this way all year, and they dealt with it good. We were just doing things that we've been doing all along."

The Lady Bulldogs, however, weren't able to carry the momentum of that victory down the road to the Butte Invitational Softball tournament over the weekend.

On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs fell to Billings Central 0-10 and then dropped a second game to Livingston 4-7. Against Livingston, Hailey Mortensen went 2-for-3 with two doubles. The Lady 'Dogs led 4-0 after two innings but weren't able to keep their feet on the gas, and the Lady Rangers rallied back for the victory.

On Saturday, the Whitefish girls fell to Hardin 2-13. Kaitlyn Wehrli had a triple in the loss. Madison Tveidt and Heather Bailey each had a hit. Taylor Ybarra-Brunty came back from her broken cheekbone injury, but failed to register a hit as she worked her way back into the rotation.

The Whitefish girls take on Polson on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smith Fields in Whitefish.
