Vals dash Kats playoff hopes

| October 8, 2009 11:00 PM

The Kats didn't get the job done. And Bigfork, with just one substitute, played a heckuva game.

In the end, the two teams ended up tied Tuesday night 1-1, a score that dashed any hopes of the Wildkats making it to the playoffs. So tonight's (Thursday) homecoming game will be playing for pride.

The game was a story that played out all season for the girls. They controlled the ball through much of the game, but they got off few high quality shots.

The Kats grabbed the lead at the 14th minute when freshman Danielle Delventhal knocked in a shot with an assist by McKenzie Reeve.

But the Kats couldn't get an insurance goal after that and on the 63rd minute, a Kat defender was called for obstruction. That set up a direct kick for Bigfork.

On the kick, defender Madison Sandefer apparently moved before the whistle and was given a yellow card. Bigfork got to kick again. Goalie Niesha Thompson made the save on Kaitlin Charlebois' shot, but Kenna Hauns knocked in the rebound for the tie.

Bigfork then did an admirable job of holding off the Kats to secure the tie.

The Kats outshot the Vals 16-3. Vals goalie Danielle Morris had 15 saves.

Coach Greg Trenerry was unhappy with the obstruction call. It's a foul that is rarely called in high school.

"I haven't seen that call in 13 years," he told the referee after the game.

On Friday, the girls blanked Polson 3-0 .

McKenzie Reeve scored at the 13 minute mark on an assist from Tyler Gress. Then Danielle Delventhal headed in a rebound at the 45 minute mark to make it 2-0. Julia Burgi knocked in the last shot to make it 3-0.

"It was probably one of the best games we played for an entire game," said Trenerry.

Trenerry said the subs really stepped up their play in that match.
