The Whitefish Community Foundation will hold its 2009 Community Grant Awards Presentation at the O’Shaughnessy on Thursday, Nov. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. The board of directors will host the event with hors d’oeuvres and no-host wine and beer. The Whitefish High School Drum Line and Jazz Band will perform during the social hour. A video on the Foundation’s work over the past few years at 6:30 p.m. Last year, the Foundation distributed 30 grants totaling $117,000 to local nonprofits during the awards event. The Whitefish Housing Authority and Whitefish Area Land Trust (WALT) will hold its annual meeting and fundraiser at the Great Northern Brewery on Central Avenue on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 5-8 p.m. Board members will be there, and an overview of Whitefish housing will be presented. Chamber music concerts in November will feature six principals of Glacier Symphony Orchestra — Sam Taylor, violin, April Lane, piano, Michael Sporre, violin, Jenanne Solberg, viola, Janet Haarvig, cello, Dinah Weimer, clarinet, and Rebecca Nelson, flute. Taylor, Lane, Sporre and Solberg are on the faculty of North Valley Music School. Selections include “Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano” by Darius Milhaud. “Trio for Flute, Violin and Piano” by Nino Rota and “Piano Quintet” by Johannes Brahms. Performances will take place Friday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. at Northridge Lutheran Church, in Kalispell, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, in Whitefish. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 children and $3 each additional child, available at the door one-hour prior to performances, by calling 270-3903 or in person at North Valley Music School. Proceeds will go to the North Valley Music School Scholarship Fund.

The Flathead/Kootenai Chapter of the Montana Wilderness Association will bring Patagonia’s Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival to the O’Shaughnessy on Friday, Nov. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. Film topics include skiing, urban homesteading and roadless areas. The feature film, “Division Street,” by Eric Bandick, reviews sustainable road projects and wildlife corridors for the 21st century. There will be door prizes, food and beverages. Tickets are $10 available at all Montana Coffee Traders and The White Room and at the door.

The Rotary Club of Whitefish recently announced their second annual Spirit of Whitefish award in recognition of unsung heroes of the Flathead Valley community. The Shepherd’s Hand Free Clinic of Whitefish has been named as the 2009 honoree. They will be celebrated during a fundraiser at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The latest Teton Gravity Research Freeride movie “Session” will be shown at the Flathead High School auditorium on Saturday Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. “Session” documents the true wealth of the mountain experience, with footage of deep snow in Alagna, Italy, forbidden powder in Poland, massive wedges in Colorado, new gap jumps in Utah, and seven weeks of epic riding conditions in Alaska. Cost is $10 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Whitefish Mountain Resort Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Team. Doors open at 6:30, and refreshments and snacks will be available. The movie is sponsored by the White Room. Information about the freestyle program will be available.

Creation Festival: The Tour will come to Majestic Valley Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7, starting at 6 p.m. The Christian music festival will feature Jars Of Clay with special guests Thousand Foot Krutch, Audio Adrenaline, B. Whitefish Theatre Co. will present a Black Curtain staged reading of “Blackbird” on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the O’Shaughnessy. Written by David Harrower and winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for best new play in London, “Blackbird” is full of suspense, surprises, ambiguity, complexity and depth. According to The New York Times’ Ben Brantley, the play “is theater at its most elemental —one man, one woman, one set and a head-to-head confrontation about events long past that occurs in real time.” Tickets are $8 available only at the door. The 10th annual Herron Park Cyclocross will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Herron Park, in Kalispell, promoted by Flathead Cycling. This is the state championship. The event is a track race with obstacles and hills. Riders have to carry their bikes in places. Registration opens at 9 a.m. Women, Men’s B, and Masters B 40-plus entries start 10:30 a.m. and race 45 for minutes, and the juniors will start one lap behind. The 60-minute Men’s A class race starts 11:30 a.m., and the Masters A 40-plus entries will start one lap behind and race for about 55 minutes. The Glacier Babe Ruth baseball league will be hosting their annual Glacier Babe Ruth board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Pin ‘n’ Cue in Whitefish. Glacier Babe Ruth has been awarded the 2010 state tournament for 13-15 year-olds in July. Planning and involvement is needed.

The Whitefish High School Student Council will sponsor its annual Veterans Day observance and celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the high school gym starting at 1:10 p.m. Guest speaker Alan Kuntz will address patriotism and service to the country. Patriotic selections will be performed by the high school band, chorus, orchestra and drum line. Veterans valleywide are invited to attend in uniform, and community members are encouraged to attend and show their thanks and appreciation to those who have served our country.

Applebee’s restaurants nationwide will offer free meals to all veterans and active duty military personnel on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, in recognition of their service.
