Ida Landon

Ida A. Landon, 90, died April 6, 2010, at North Valley Hospital in Whitefish.

She was born Sept. 30, 1919, at Watford City, N.D., the seventh of eight children born to Odin and Bertha Berntson. She was raised on a potato farm and worked in a dairy as well.

She married Charles Vance in 1937. They moved to Whitefish in 1945 with three children, Darlene, Johnny and Darryl. While expecting daughter Jeanne in 1947, her oldest boy Johnny drowned in the Whitefish River, initiating the creation of the Search & Rescue Association of Flathead Valley, led by Dick Walsh.

Ida worked in various jobs in Whitefish before moving to Seattle in 1961 to become a successful Realtor. She resided there until returning to Whitefish to retire in 1987. She spent her final years being lovingly cared for by the staff at Colonial Manor.

Her husband Charles preceded her in death in 1956.

She is survived by her children Darlene Schmidt and husband Raymond, of Columbia Falls, Darryl Vance and wife Reva, of Malta, and Jeanne Canfield and husband Ken, of Whitefish; sister Esther Boreson, of Eureka; grandchildren Rick, George, Terri, Jeff, Joe, Jen, Dennis, Denise and Cedar; great grandchildren Rachel, Jason, John, Eric, Nathan, Kelly, Ciera, Trevor, Kody, Taylor, Presley and Makenna; and great great grandchildren Maclean and Schafer.

Services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Leota Anderson

Leota Marie Anderson passed away into the arms of the Lord on April 1, 2010.

She was born Oct. 27, 1926, in Burlington, Iowa, to Albert and Verna Sherer. She was later adopted by Bob and Verna Croskrey.

Leota grew up in various towns in Iowa, Kalispell and Washington, graduating from high school in Leavenworth in 1946. She then worked for Puget Sound Power & Light and First National Bank, in Wenatchee.

She met her husband Leonard while vacationing in Kalispell. They were married on Aug. 29, 1948, in Leavenworth and moved to Kalispell in 1949, where she worked for Consolidated Freightways.

Leota was a homemaker for many years until going into the second-hand trade. She ran the Next to New Shop from 1974 to 1987. She had a love for rummage sales and thrift stores but her greatest passion was her family.

She always said her children and grandchildren were her life and was thrilled to host many Sunday dinners, holidays, birthdays — anything that would bring everyone all together. As much as she cared and gave to her family, her heart also expanded to many others. She would give what she had to help others. Be it a friend or a stranger, and loved giving to children.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents, adoptive parents, sisters Opa and Betty, and brother Orville.

She is survived by her husband Leonard, of Kalispell; daughters Rita Bishop and husband Bob, of Whitefish, Carol Frehse, of Kalispell, and Linda Miller and husband Fred, of Kalispell; son Lenny and wife Shauna, of Lakeside; sister Shirley Mishler, of Iowa; grandchildren Leslie Franco, Allyson Crawford, Justin Frehse, Brittney Townsend, Melissa and Jake Miller, Jarrett Sunde, and Cody and Tehya Anderson; and five great grandchildren.

Per her request, a private family graveside service will be held.

A celebration of life took place at the Elks Lodge in Kalispell on April 10, 2010.

Duane Glenn

Duane Marshall Glenn, 68, of Del Norte, Colo., passed away at the Casa Illuminaria Nursing Home in Del Norte on April 7, 2010.

He was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, on March 28, 1942, to Velma Glenn. He served his country in the Navy and was an active member of the AA club for 23 years.

Duane was a long-time resident of Whitefish. He enjoyed fishing and working on old cars, and he loved animals.

He was preceded in death by his mother, brother Bob Drake and sister Verna Fahnstock.

He is survived by his wife Kay Wenzel, of Del Norte; children Marshall Jr., Debra, Christopher and Jennifer, all of California; brother Vera Copeland, of Whittier, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Eileen Kane

Eileen Anne Kane, 81, a resident of Whitefish for the past 37 years, died April 7, 2010, at North Valley Hospital.

Eileen was born in New York City on Dec. 17, 1928, the daughter of James and Ellen McNamara. She was raised and educated there.

She later married James Thomas Kane. In the 1960s, they owned and operated a Shell gas station in the Bronx. After 11 years, the family moved to Bozeman in 1972.

They moved to Whitefish in May 1973, where they purchased Frenchy's Chinese Gardens. They operated the restaurant until it burned to the ground in 1974. The next year, they built the Shangri-La Supper Club and, in 1989, started and operated the Par 3 on 93. They continued to operate the golf course aspect of that business until retiring in 2005.

Eileen was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Whitefish and enjoyed participating in various church activities. She was also noted as an excellent cook and found great enjoyment in handcrafts, most especially crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006.

She is survived by her children Brian Kane, of Whitefish, Deirdre Kane, of Kalispell, and James Kane, of South Bridge, Mass.; sister Theresa Schneider, of San Diego, Calif.; and grandchildren Maureen, Sean, Thomas, James, Austin and Kayden.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Whitefish on April 12, 2010. Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, N.Y.

James Powers

James Matthew Powers went home to be with our Lord over the Easter weekend of 2010.

He was born in Woodland, Calif., on March 12, 1989, to Sherri Quinn-Powers. He lived in Spokane and Yakima, Wash., and Minnesota before moving with his family to the Flathead in 2005. He attended Whitefish High School from 2005 to 2008, earning his high school diploma in June 2009.

James began working at Wendy's in Whitefish, where he was always known for his huge smile, kindness and his respect and courtesy for others. He also worked at the Red Caboose Diner and McDonald's. His "family" at McDonald's, the Red Caboose and Wendy's mourn his loss deeply.

Those who knew James remember his love for his Audi car, his clothes and his music. James made friends easily and showed his strength, optimism and promise, while continuing to develop into a fine young man.

He is preceded in death by his uncle James Powers; paternal grandfather Gordon Tripp; maternal great grandparents Alice Powers and Dewey Brookshire; paternal great grandparents William and Zita Quinn; and several uncles and cousins from his extended family.

He is survived by his parents James and Sherri Tripp; step-father Steve Schibig; siblings Caitlin, Aaron, Tyler, Emily, John, and Sara; maternal grandparents Sharon Powers and Carl Lindmark, and Timothy Quinn; paternal grandparents Linda Dennis, Carl Schibig and Joanne Schibig; maternal aunt Maryam Powers; maternal uncle John Powers; paternal aunts Carry Dennis and Cassy Tripp; paternal uncles Terrry and Heather Dennis; step-uncle Ed Schibig and aunt Penny Zimmerman; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held April 12, 2010, at the Austin Funeral Home Chapel. A celebration of life followed at the Golden Agers Senior Center in Whitefish.
