Cold shooting hurts Lady 'Dogs' chances
The Lady Bulldogs dropped two nonconference games last week, losing to both Eureka and Frenchtown by 27 points.
At Eureka on Feb. 4, the 'Dogs were ice cold on offense in the first half and struggled moving the ball against a trap. The Lions held Whitefish to two points in the first quarter and 10 in the half to open up an 18-point lead going into the break.
Shelby Backer led the team in scoring with 13 points. Jessica Slaybaugh added nine points on four field goals, including a three-pointer.
At home Feb. 5 against Frenchtown, Whitefish was doomed again by cold shooting in the first quarter. The Lady Broncs held the 'Dogs to three points and jumped out to a 14-point lead.
The next two quarters played much closer. Whitefish matched Frenchtown in scoring, with nine points in the second period, and out scored the Broncs by one point in the third.
Karissa DeMarco knocked down a jumper in the second quarter and added a pair of free throws. Backer opened the third with a nice post move for a layup, and Slaybaugh added another layup off a steal on the ensuing play to cut the Broncs lead to 16.
Frenchtown put the game out of the reach in the fourth after they opened the quarter on a 15-2 run.
Slaybaugh led the team in scoring with six points.
Whitefish (1-14, 1-5) plays at Bigfork on Thursday and hosts Columbia Falls on Saturday.
