Sign regs

I wish to express my feelings on what the owner of Mrs. Spoonovers is attempting to do. She contacted the city about the sign and was told no, it did not fit into the current range of sign ordinance laws, as she already had too much signage to do that.

She did this more than once, and was told no. My question to her is what does she not understand about the word no? So then she attempted to prove herself more important than every other business owner by doing what she wanted anyway.

Now we have all of the ongoing problems that have arisen from her arrogance, and she seems to be proud of the fact that she can cause problems of this type and cost the taxpayers money for her little fling.

The big question is, "Why does she think she is so superior to all of the law abiding citizens in Whitefish, that may have wanted to do the same as she?" She is not and should be ashamed of herself for trying to gain favor over those others who abide by the regulations.

The sign regulations are so broad that anyone can fit within the parameter of them. I say again, shame on her. I would suggest that she clean up her act, clean all of the writing junk off the front windows and she would no doubt fit within the ordinance regulations with no problem.

Theater kudos

Maybe I've lived in Whitefish too long, but I remember the days when our entertainment was a weekend potluck at someone's house — or a Friday night of kicking up our heels at the Blue Moon.

The year is now 2010 and those days are gone forever, thanks to the Whitefish Theatre Company, Alpine Theatre Project, Glacier Symphony and Chorale, music schools, Amadeus Festival, dance companies, ice skating shows, Winter Carnival. The list goes on and on. Not to mention all the sporting and school events.

It's enough to make a person crazy. There are not enough nights in the week to take them all in. Sometimes there are so many on one night that we have to make choices. Life used to be so simple in Whitefish, Montana. When do we fit in an overnight hike in Glacier Park or a day of skiing on Big Mountain?

Broadway has major competition in this little corner of Northwest Montana. When a production of "South Pacific" at the Whitefish Middle School auditorium is so good that a person needs to go twice and they wish they could go again. Or every production of the Whitefish Theatre Company or the Alpine Theatre Project staggers your imagination.

Who needs to buy a ticket to New York? Airplane travel is not fun anymore, and we should fall on our knees and thank all the professionals, generous donors and volunteers who bring us the gift of theater, music, and entertainment in downtown Whitefish.

It would be nice to name names, but the Whitefish Pilot would run out of ink. Besides, you know who you are. We are in awe of your talent and thank you every time you dazzle our senses and transport us into the world of make-believe. The good old days can't begin to compare with the Whitefish of 2010.

Hidden litter

As an avid user of Riverside Park on Baker Avenue, I am compelled to write this letter.

I walk my two dogs there on a daily basis. The city does a wonderful job of keeping the walking path and parking lot plowed, providing dog waste pick-up bags and waste receptacles. Most of the dog walkers are very considerate and utilize these provisions.

Now that the snow is here, however, I see a huge increase in waste not being picked up. There are piles in the middle of the plowed paths as well as on the snow alongside. There is no excuse for these messes, and it's the height of laziness to not use what is provided.

There is also a fine for not complying with the rules. If you use these walking paths, please be considerate of others and do not ruin it for all of us.

Tax protests

To all those outraged at the property reappraisals, a network is being established so that we have a way to communicate. Even if you did not protest your taxes, it is important to participate.

Without a permanent solution, property taxes will continue to spiral out of control by 2014 and beyond. Anyone else interested in joining the effort, please e-mail fairproptaxnetwork@centurytel.net.

Our legislators need to have a bill and they need to have our support. Even with an ongoing lawsuit's), we must be prepared with a bill which will apply a fair property valuation statewide.

Once again, 51st Winter Carnival "Going to the Sun," celebrating Glacier National Parks Centennial, was a wonderful month-long celebration.
