Cheers for volunteers

Kathy Klocow moved here from Minnesota. A graduate of business college, she spent her early working years as a secretary. Her husband Edward was a trucker, and in 1979, having seen most of the U.S., he announced "We're moving to Montana."

They thereupon packed their belongings, along with their three toddlers, and headed west. They settled in the Flathead and have never regretted it. They love the area — the people, the climate, the fresh mountain air and the beautiful scenery. The "toddlers," twins Carmen and Cameron and their brother C.J., all graduated from Whitefish High School en route to further education and careers.

Edward, a motorcycle enthusiast, acquired a "three wheeler," which they both enjoy. Last year, they rode to Minnesota and back, and Kathy is looking forward to future expeditions. She works part-time and largely confines her volunteering to the Whitefish Soroptimist Club.

Kathy particularly enjoys the many hours she spends at the Thrift Haus because she knows her efforts are translated directly into community benefits. She explains that although the sale of "like new" merchandise at minimal prices is in itself a service, there is a double benefit in that all proceeds from the sales are recycled into the community. She proudly displays a list of more than 50 local entities to which the club regularly contributes, in addition to providing thousands of dollars in yearly scholarships.

She volunteers because it makes her feel good to know that she is doing something worthwhile and helping others. Also important to her are the fun times and lasting friendships that develop through volunteerism in association with other like-minded "people helping people."

Kathy, the service you provide to our community is immeasurable. Your efforts have added materially to the well being of many others and your community appreciates it.
