Adopting a furry friend

As someone who grew up always having pets, it had been hard going for several years without having a furry creature to love. After a full year of regular whining, I finally got one.

My husband Nate and I went to adopt a cat from the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, where we knew we would find an animal in need of a good home.

We discovered that picking out the companion we would have for the next several years was a challenge, especially with so many to choose from. We spent a good hour in the cat room, which was far beyond what Nate's allergies could handle.

But, we found him: a gray-and-black tabby who was shy, but loving.

What we found discouraging was that our 8-year-old cat had been at the Humane Society for two years, as had many of his peers in the cat room, simply because he's mature in age. While I understand the pull toward a kitten, older cats too have a lot to offer. Though he was timid at first, our new companion, who we gave the name Syrah, has been playful, humorous and affectionate since we brought him home in June.

We know he was a good choice, but we still think about all the ones we didn't pick that could still use a home. Knowing that the Flathead County Animal Shelter has been at or near capacity lately, I would encourage those who are able to invest their time and finances into a pet to consider adopting from a local shelter. And remember when picking out your new animal friend that even the older ones still have love left to give.
