The Whitefish Theatre Company will present “The Clean House” at the O’Shaughnessy Center on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 14, at 4 p.m. The heart-warming comedy by Sarah Ruhl, a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize, is directed by Nancy Nei. The South American flavor of the story involves a successful doctor with a neat and orderly life and home who hires a Brazilian cleaning lady named Matilde who doesn’t like to clean but dreams of being a comedienne. The doctor’s sister is obsessed with cleanliness and volunteers to clean for Matilde, while the doctor’s husband finds his soul mate in a vivacious, older Argentinean woman. The play contains adult language and situations. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 seniors and $8 students. All seats are reserved. Flathead Valley Community College Theatre will present the one-man show “Shake-speare’s Treason” starring New York actor and author Hank Whittemore on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13. Co-written by Whittemore and director Ted Story of New York, the play is based on Whittemore’s 900-page edition of the Sonnets titled “The Monument.” Whittemore began his professional acting career at 19. After graduating from Notre Dame, he worked as a reporter while writing 11 books. The Coke Classic 5-on-5 basketball tournament will take place at Whitefish High School and Whitefish Middle School on Friday through Sunday, March 12-14 for boys and girls in grades 5-8. The Glacier Author Book Fair will take place at Glacier Discovery Square, on Nucleus Avenue in Columbia Falls, on Friday, March 12, at 6 p.m. Sumio Herada, Sharon Midkiff Randolph and other local authors will present an evening of stories, slides, book signings, food and fun. Music will be provided by Joe Procita. A suggested donation at the door will benefit the First Best Place organization and Discovery Square.
The Discovery Developmental Center will host the second annual Grapes, Barley, and Hops wine and beer tasting event in the grand ballroom of the historic Keith House, 538 Fifth Ave. East, in Kalispell, on Friday, March 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person available at Discovery or at the door. Whitefish Animal Group (WAG) and the city parks and recreation department will host a public meeting on the Hugh Rogers Wag Park at the Whitefish Armory on Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to noon. The purpose is to provide a project update and collect feedback on the 5-acre fenced dog park on the Armory Park complex that opened in June 2009. When fundraising goals are met this spring, plans call for a third pathway and a pavilion to be constructed in the dog park. Presentations will also be made by Whitefish Animal Hospital, the Humane Society of Northwest Montana and Run Whitefish. The Glacier Symphony and Chorale will present “Night of the Operas,” a concert that features the world’s best-loved opera choruses and overtures and will showcase the 70-voice chorale and the full orchestra, in the Flathead High School auditorium on Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14, at 7:30 p.m. Selections will include the men’s chorus from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” the processional from Wagner’s “Tannhauser,” the prelude from Bizet’s “Carmen,” the “Easter Hymn” from Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana,” and the majestic “Coronation Scene” from Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov.” Singers Karen Larson McMullen and Brad Seaman, who both sang in GSC’s 2008 production of “Carmen,” will have featured soloist roles in the concert.
