Funding available through Boys and Girls Club

As a former board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Glacier Country I would like to provide some further insight into the problem of funding now being experienced with the after-school program in the Somers-Lakeside School District.

As a founding member of the Boys and Girls Club, I worked very hard to have the Somers school district be one of the schools where the program would be started.

A program was started and the following year we, the Boys and Girls Club of Glacier Country, together with School District 29 wrote the 21st Century grant which would fund the program. Working with the school district we allowed them to be the fiscal agent and handle the money.

Two years into the five year grant the school district informed the Boys and Girls Club it was no longer needed.

As Boys And Girls Club and a 501 (c)3 there is access to many different funding sources. It saddens me that the school district will lose a valuable program due to lack of funds and lack of foresight to establish a lasting program in coordination with Boys and Girls Club. Boys and Girls Club of Glacier Country runs well-established programs in Evergreen and in Columbia Falls. They have been able to purchase facilities in both of these communities.

The Ed Jaeger Benefit was a tremendous success due to the well-organized and well-executed work of so many.

The rods, antiques and classic car owners brought and displayed many of their beautiful cars. Generous donations from businesses and individuals throughout the Valley were auctioned by the donated service of Roshon Auction Service, and active participation by the large crowd made the lunch and auction so successful.

It is a pleasure to live in this caring community —- what a great day.
