Cats have a bumpy Mining City tourney

The Columbia Falls wrestling team went 1-5 at the Mining City Duals in Butte Dec. 9-10, with some tough matches against Class AA opponents.

On Friday, the Cats lost to Dillon 51-31, Glacier High School 72-3 and Billings West 67-18.

In Saturday's action, the Cats bounced back and dropped Class AA school CM Russell, of Great Falls, 42-36, but then lost to Ronan 53-27.

Glacier High went on to win the tournament.

Cats coach Jesse Schaeffer said his wrestlers need to focus on competing the entire match.

"We're in a lot of close matches, and then we're getting pinned," he said. "We've got to wrestle six minutes."

Wildcat Kohl Thompson had a great weekend. The 152-pounder went 4-1, losing just one match to Shelby Grant, of Ronan, 5-3. Thompson also scored the team's lone points against Glacier High, dropping Grant Tafoya, 14-9.

Schaeffer noted that freshman heavyweight Wayde Motichka had a good weekend, winning three matches. Zayne Brunz came up from the junior varsity ranks to wrestle well, too.

"Brunz had a great weekend," Schaeffer said.

The Cats have a core of six wrestlers who are doing well, Schaeffer said, and now it's time for the rest of the team to step up.

In the losses, the Cats gave up too many pins. They'll have to stay off their backs better this week as they face conference foe Libby in a dual this Thursday away. Schaeffer said he didn't know much about this Logger team, but he expects it will be competitive.

"Anything can happen in Libby," he said.

The team travels to the Buzz Lucey tournament in Eureka on Saturday.
