MatCats third at Ronan duals tournament

The Columbia Falls wrestling team took third at the Ronan duals tournament last week. Corvallis won the event and Polson took second. Columbia Falls beat host Ronan 54-25 to take third in the two day dual tournament.

The Cats beat Flathead junior varsity 77-0, Thompson Falls 54-36, Deer Lodge 66-18 and Libby 45-25. Their lone loss was to Corvallis, 52-33. Sal Baccaro, Justin Whitman and Cody Bartos won all their matches for the MatCats.

“We wrestled well after a long break,” said coach Jessie Schaeffer. “We got a lot out of everyone.”

The MatCats had two-a-day practices during the break as they honed their skills for the biggest tournament of the year.

The team travels to Frenchtown Thursday and then to Missoula Friday and Saturday for the Rocky Mountain Classic, a tournament that pits wrestlers from across western Montana and the Northwest. The classic does not distinguish wrestlers by school class, so a championship at the tournament is in some cases, more difficult than a state title.

“It’s going to be a dandy,” Schaeffer said. He said the goal is to get two or three wrestlers to place at the Classic, which this year will also feature wrestlers from a Nevada team as well as large schools in Idaho and Montana. The Cats will travel to Frenchtown, spend the night, then go to Missoula. Junior varsity wrestlers will compete at a tournament at Big Sky and wrestlers that lose at the Classic will travel to the JV tourney to get some wrestling in.

The MatCats next home action is a dual against Polson Jan. 21.
