Girls snare two conference victories
The Columbia Falls girls basketball team took two more divisional victories last week, downing Ronan 58-17 Friday and crosstown rival Whitefish 53-14 Saturday.
The Kats were led by Kayla DeWit in both games. She had 27 points against the Lady Maidens and 17 points and 13 rebounds against Whitefish. The girls completely dominated the Bulldogs, as they shot out to a 17-1 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs added a late bucket in the quarter to make it 17-3, but the Kats defense stifled the Dogs to just two points in the second quarter for a 34-5 halftime lead.
Sophomore Hope Burlage also had a great game with 10 points and nine rebounds. Jonna Werner chipped in nine points and eight boards.
“They came out and played super hard,” said coach Dan Fairbank. “We had a good effort from everyone in that game.”
The Kats limited their turnovers. They had just 11 against Ronan and eight against the Dogs.
The girls are now 4-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Competition will get tougher this week as they face Glacier and Loyola. The Glacier game starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at home, while the girls face Loyola away Saturday.
Both teams are tough, Fairbank noted. Glacier, in particular, plays a press defense.
“Glacier is very quick and very athletic,” Fairbank said. “Loyola is a good team as well.”
