New green box regs need review

| July 27, 2011 7:38 AM

These are my thoughts on the recent ruling/law that took effect on July 1 regarding no "dumpster diving" at the green box location in Columbia Falls as well as salvaging at the landfill.

I can understand not allowing salvaging at the landfill with all the heavy equipment driving around, but at the green boxes, this new law is asinine. A lot of people rely on their "dumpster finds" to supplement their income. I believe for some, this is their income. Now, I'm not talking just the recyclables like the aluminum cans. I'm talking about stuff that still has usable life.

I think rather than eliminating the dumpster diving altogether, maybe a middle-ground approach should have been attempted. How about if the attendant could issue "permits" to dumpster dive, having the person sign a liability waiver? This person would be required to show it to the attendant when requested.

Is this something that can be reviewed? I would really like to see this law reversed or rewritten. I hope I have support from the community that will be willing to rally behind the issue.

I have removed many an item from the dumpsters over the years. Some I have reused in my home, in my yard given away. Let's rethink this and give it another chance, please.

I am a concerned citizen who hates to see more waste than necessary. I do my share of recycling, but re-use is greener that recycling.
