Columbia Falls was the top speech team in Class A at the Flathead tournament Nov. 18-19.

The Wildcats edged Stevensville, who took second and Whitefish, third. But the Cats didn't get any speakers on the winners' podium, as there was some tough competition from seven AA schools.

Mary Gross and Allison Foust took third in policy and debate to pace the Cats.

"This tournament brought together the best speakers on the west side of Montana," said coach Tara Norick. "We really appreciate being able to see the top speakers, as our students learn so much from them. We had nine freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors and two seniors place at this tournament. Our young team is making progress, but we realize how much work we still have to do."

The team has a break over Thanksgiving and then travels to Libby Dec. 3.
