Man charged with trading drugs for sex
A 32-year-old Columbia Falls man faces up to life in prison if convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old girl in exchange for drugs.
According to court documents, Daniel Smith was arrested Aug. 26 and charged with sexual intercourse without consent, sexual assault and accountability to sexual intercourse without consent.
In an interview with a Kalispell detective, the young girl said she had sex with Smith one or two times a week. She also said Smith brought drugs to Jennifer Johnson, the woman who allegedly forced the girl to have sex with Smith.
Johnson, 43, of Kalispell, was arrested Aug. 27 and charged with felony aggravated promotion of prostitution. She faces up to life in prison if convicted of the charge.
According to court documents, the last sexual contact between Smith and the girl was May 18. The situation came to light May 20 when the girl was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center by her baby sitter.
The girl told police the sexual activity took place at Johnson's apartment or at Smith's trailer in Columbia Falls. She also said Smith would allow his 19-year-old friend to have sex with her. The friend has not been charged.
Johnson and Smith are scheduled for arraignment in Flathead District Court Sept. 15. Aggravated promotion of prostitution is punishable by no less than two years and up to life in prison. Johnson has also been charged with issuing a bad check.
