High school gears up for Homecoming

Bigfork High School students will show off their Viking and Valkyrie spirit in a variety of ways next week as part of the annual Homecoming celebration.

“We’ve been planning various Homecoming activites since school started, and there was a lot of preparation before school even began,” said high school student council adviser Charlie Ball.

The weeklong bill of activities begins Monday with the first spirit day theme: color day. On that day, each class is assigned a color, and students are asked to wear as much of their class’s color as possible.

Other spirit day themes for the week include superhero day, twin day, thuggin’ Thursday and blue and white day.

“I like the spirit days,” Ball said. “It’s always exciting to see the fun things they (the students) come up with. Some of the kids who you might not think would participate in that sort of stuff really come out and show their spirit, which is great.”

Also during the week, each fall sports team will have the opportunity to run a lap through the halls at a designated time during the school day. The cheerleaders will run Monday, the volleyball team will run Tuesday, the cross-country teams will run Wednesday, the soccer teams will run Thursday and the football team will run Friday.

The annual Homecoming pep rally will be held at 1:20 p.m. Friday in the high school gym, and the community is encouraged to attend. Before the pep rally, students will participate in several fun activities, including a dodgeball tournament and a “Minute to Win It” contest that will be modeled after the popular television program.

Each class is also tasked with building a float for Friday’s Homecoming parade. Although the parade route will be altered due to construction downtown, it will start in the same place as past years — in front of the high school parking lot on Commerce Street — at around 2 p.m.

“The kids spend a long time coming up with ideas for their floats,” Ball said.

Ball said local business owners are encouraged to decorate their storefronts for homecoming.

“Last year we had groups of students and teachers that put Vikings on the streets in town, and they led up to the football field,” Ball said. “This year we’re looking at maybe painting on some windows around town like we did for the state fooball championship last year.”

The football team will take on Troy at 7 p.m. Friday. Homecoming royalty will be crowned at halftime.

Prior to the game there will be a tailgate barbecue at the field.

The homecoming dance will be Saturday beginning at 9 p.m. and going until midnight in the elementary school cafeteria.

The other fall sports teams will compete in their homecoming match-ups throughout the week, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when the volleyball team hosts Ronan at 4 p.m.

The boys soccer team will play the Whitefish Bulldogs at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

The girls soccer team will play Whitefish at 2 p.m. Saturday.

 The cross-country teams, who do not have a home meet this fall, will compete in Hamilton at 11 a.m. Oct. 1.
