Border limits raised for Canadian shoppers

New rules for Canadian travelers crossing the U.S.-Canada border will go into effect on June 1. The new rules could help Flathead businesses where Canadian visitors shop.

The rules remain unchanged for visits of less than 24 hours and for the limits on alcohol and tobacco.

The limit for tax-exempt goods carried by visitors who visit the U.S. for 24 to 48 hours will increase to $200 Canadian from $50.

The limit for tax-exempt goods carried by visitors who visit the U.S. for more than 48 hours will increase to $800 Canadian from $400 for up to seven days and from $750 for trips more than seven days long.
