Highline Trail opened following closure for deluge repair, cleanup

Glacier National Park’s popular Highline Trail was opened to hikers at Logan Pass on Friday, July 27.

Hikers were warned they may encounter damage from the July 17 rain storm, including rocks and mud on the trail and eroded tread.

Park trail crews worked on the trail from Logan Pass to Haystack Butte. Much of the tread, flat surfaces or step-like features built by trail crew were washed out.

Bedrock is exposed in places, which can be angled downhill, wet and potentially slick. The use of hiking poles is encouraged.

Hikers in the Park’s higher elevations are advised to have appropriate footwear for snow travel, specifically lug-sole boots, and self-arrest tools such as ice axe and crampons, as well as the knowledge and skills to utilize the tools.

Caution should be used near rivers and streams, as water may be extremely cold and running swift and high. Hikers are encouraged to turn around if conditions exceed what is comfortable or beyond personal experience and limitations.
