Little heroes

| August 1, 2012 7:40 AM

I had the pleasure to visit your city on a recent Friday to celebrate the life of a good friend. My friend leaves behind a granddaughter in Washington and three grandsons in Columbia Falls.

My friend’s memorial service was to end with the four grandchildren releasing one balloon each to drift off into the sky. Just before that closing, the 8-year-old’s balloon popped. Before the gravity of his loss hit him, his 15-year-old brother gave him his own balloon. There was no hesitation, only the selfless spirit passed down from the grandfather they now honored. The same selfless spirit their grandfather had passed to his son, their father.

Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.” Selflessness is a worthy legacy, indeed. At the signal, three balloons drifted off, the older brother helping the young boy keep them in sight, and some people say there are no more heroes.
