Boys Nation

Blake Ladenburg, 17, a senior at Columbia Falls High School, is one of 98 high school student representatives throughout the U.S. chosen to attend the American Legion Boys Nation. He is one of two delegates selected from Montana based on leadership skills, academic record and activity at American Legion Boys State. The week-long program introduces the students to the structure and function of the federal government, while combining lectures and forums with visitations to federal agencies, institutions, memorials and historical spots in and around Washington, D.C.

Plum Creek scholarships

In 2012, the Plum Creek Community Scholarship Program will award 117 scholarships totaling $141,000 to students in 15 states. Plum Creek awarded 21 college scholarships to students who are the children of employees and provided an additional 96 scholarships to selected students who are not affiliated with employees but who live in communities where Plum Creek does business. Five Columbia Falls High School students recently received scholarships from Plum Creek:

• Nikolette Birky will attend Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., where she plans to study veterinary science. She is a member of the National Honor Society and played on the varsity softball and volleyball teams. She also participated in high school theater productions.

• Demari DeReu plans to attend the University of Montana-Missoula where she will major in English. Her interests include cheerleading, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and hiking.

• Josh Haverkorn plans to study computer science. His interests include track and other outdoor activities.

• Serena Nelson plans to attend Flathead Valley Community College where she will pursue a degree in general studies. Her interests include forensic anthropology and music. She plays piano in the Don Lawrence Orchestra.

• Jinise Osborne will attend Montana State University-Billings where she will major in pre-physical therapy. She was all-state in cross-country. Her interests include speech and debate, and track and field.
