Cats take third at state behind Williams, Jones

Derrick Williams won three races and Daniel Jones won the javelin and shot put as the Columbia Falls boys track team took third at the state Class A meet May 25-26 in Bozeman.

Williams ended his high school career with state titles in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. His times were 1:56.82, 4:26.87 and 9:51.25 respectively.

“I’m super excited with that,” Williams said.

He said running conditions were less than ideal, with wind, rain and snow.

“But that’s track in Montana,” he said. Williams’ wins amounted to 30 of the Cats points.

Jones also had a great end to his high school career. The senior won the shot put with a throw of 49-3 1/2 and a javelin throw of 201-5. The javelin throw was just a foot shorter than the mark Jones set one week earlier at the Class A divisional tournament.

The Wildcats also took sixth in the 400 relay with a time of 44.86. Senior Trevor Wobschall was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.43, and Josiah Osborne took sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.78.

Missing was senior runner Anthony Correa, who suffered a hamstring injury in the divisional tournament. Correa was a key component in the team’s relays and had a good shot at winning the 200 and 400 prior to his injury. Corvallis won the state meet for the boys.

The Columbia Falls girls took 10th place. Jinise Osborne was fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:37.60 and third in the 3,200 with a time of 11:54.34. Teammate Samantha Mundel was fifth with a time of 12:09.06.

The Wildkats took sixth in the 400 relay with a time of 52.20, and Carla Nicosia was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-09.
