Historical Society calendar
The Columbia Falls Historical Society is in the process of compiling photos for its 2014 calendar. Anyone with photos to be considered is asked to contact Dorothy Downen at 892-5894 or bring them to the society’s next meeting at the old chapel building at the Montana Veterans Home on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m.
Shakespeare in the Park
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will perform Shakespeare’s “Henry V” free at Flathead Valley Community College on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. Now in its 41st season, the troupe expects to perform 75 performances in 60 communities in Montana, northern Wyoming, eastern Idaho, western North Dakota and eastern Washington this summer. The company features 10 professional actors selected by national auditions who tour without technical assistance. Audiences are encouraged to show up prior to the appointed curtain time with chairs, blankets, a picnic supper, and friends and family to enjoy the evening. Annual studio tour
The Hockaday Museum of Art will present its fourth annual Local Color Studio Tour on Sept. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Artists and artisans working and living in the Flathead Valley will demonstrate their skills for visitors and engage the viewer in the creative process. Admission to studios in Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Kalispell, Lakeside and Whitefish is free. A wide variety of media will be presented, from glass, metal, pottery and buckskin clothing to oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic and dye on silk. Trumbull Ck. project OK’d
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 1 has completed an environmental assessment for removal of trees and vegetation and dredging on Trumbull Creek to prevent annual flooding at the bottom of Tombrink Hill on U.S. 2 just west of Columbia Falls. No comments were received during the 30-day review, and FWP has approved the project. For more information, contact FWP fisheries biologist Mark Deleray at 406-751-4543.
Book sale
The Columbia Falls Library Association will hold a Backdoor Bag Sale at their used book store location, 39 Sixth Street West, Columbia Falls, on Aug. 16 and 17. Fill a plastic grocery bag with books for $3. Bookstore hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. Association members will pick up books, videos or audio donations. County recycling
The Flathead County Commissioners and Flathead County Solid Waste District will hold a joint workshop to discuss the future of recycling in the Flathead in the Earl Bennett Building, in Kalispell, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 3 p.m. Two options under consideration are reducing the locations for recycling collection and raising the annual fee included in county property taxes. Public comment will be taken at trash@flathead.mt.gov.
Leadership Montana
Jane Ratzlaff, of Columbia Falls, the executive director of the Glacier National Park Conservancy, is among the 50 members of the Leadership Montana Class of 2014. The 10th class includes community, business, education and government leaders from across the state. To date, more than 370 graduates of the program represent more than 50 communities across the state, serving in key leadership positions in businesses, education, government, health care, non-profit organizations and community boards.
