For the 18th consecutive year, Special Olympics Montana will host the State Winter Games next week at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

More than 300 athletes, 30 unified partners and 150 coaches from 25 teams are expected to gather in Whitefish to compete in four different sports from Feb. 24-26. Competitions include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding.

The Parade of Athletes through downtown Whitefish is set for Sunday at 4 p.m., followed by Opening Ceremonies, which will include the ceremonial lighting of the Special Olympics Cauldron. University of Montana’s mascot Monte will be at the parade, along with Mrs. Montana and other special guests.

Time trials and competitions are Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Whitefish Mountain Resort, and again Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Volunteers are still needed to help organize and prepare for the Winter Games. Contact Karen Kimball at 837-0319 or email dryflyk@gmail.com.
