The body of a 23-year-old man visiting Hungry Horse from out of state was recovered in the Flathead River the day after he was reported missing.

According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, Alan Castro, of Fairfax, Va., was reported missing from a house on River Road about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. He reportedly suffered from schizophrenia.

The man’s footprints in the snow led to the bank of the river and then disappeared at the edge of the ice. An air, water and land search was initiated that day without success. Divers were unable to find the missing man beneath the ice shelf near where his footprints ended.

The air and water searches were called off Friday night, but the land search continued. The air and water searches started up again on Saturday at 7 a.m. The man’s body was located several miles downstream by helicopter.
