Sun Road open to hikers and bikers this weekend

Hikers and bikers can once again take to the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park this weekend, though the Logan Pass parking lot will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday while crews work on cleaning the lot. There are no restrictions on the road itself, however.

Park plows worked on the Big Drift most of the week. The drift is the last section of snow to be cleared from the road. The road is closed to vehicles at Avalanche Creek on the west side and at Rising Sun on the east side.

On the east side there are no weekend hiker biker restrictions.

Most other Park secondary roads are open, except the Inside North Fork Road from the Logging Creek Ranger Station to Fish Creek. The road to Bowman Lake is open, but the road to Kintla Lake won't open until June 14, due to federal budget cuts. The road is closed at Doverspike Meadow.

The roads are passable by bicycle, however, though there may be downed trees in the road.

During the week, the west side of the road is closed to hikers and bikers Monday through Thursday until 6 p.m. due to road construction. On the east side hikers and bikers can travel to Siyeh Bend on weekdays while plow crews are working.
