Logan Pass opens from east side Saturday
Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road will be open for motor vehicles to Logan Pass on Saturday, June 15, Park officials announced Friday.
Favorable weather conditions and monetary support from the Glacier National Park Conservancy contributed to the timely accessibility of Logan Pass this year. Funds from the Conservancy were used to facilitate park employee overtime hours needed to open the road.
From the west entrance, the Sun Road will remain closed to motor vehicles at Avalanche Creek due to a road construction contract. However, hikers and bikers can travel the closed section to Logan Pass and beyond this weekend.
Restrooms at Logan Pass will be open, but potable water will not be available until next week. The Logan Pass Visitor Center will remain closed at this time.
Logan Pass still has significant snow, which make it difficult for hiking but good for skiing. The trails are covered in snow and may be difficult to follow. Visitors should exercise caution when walking on snow and be alert for snow that may not support their body weight due to melt holes and running water beneath the snow.
Snow bridges over streams and wet rocks along streams can be hazardous. Visitors should avoid crossing steep, snow-covered slopes where a fall could be disastrous. A reliable map and compass are recommended when traveling on snow-covered trails. The Highline Trail from Logan Pass is closed due to snow conditions.
The entire length of the Sun Road should open Friday, June 21, weather provided. Terms of the construction contract with HK Construction allow the company full use of the road until that date. The road will be closed during the week to hikers and bikers on the west side from Avalanche Creek to Logan Pass until June 21.
Most secondary roads in Glacier are also now open. The road to Kintla Lake opened Friday, June 14.
