The Columbia Falls tennis teams ended their regular season last week and will head into divisional play in Kalispell hoping to qualify some players for the state tournament.

On May 6, the boys lost to Whitefish, 6-1, and the girls lost 5-2. The teams split with Libby away on May 9 — the girls won 4-3, and the boys lost 6-1.

Emily Getts is playing solid tennis for the girls squad. The freshman dropped Sloan Ellis, of Whitefish, 6-2, 6-4, and Erin Rogers of Libby, 6-0, 6-0.

Getts hasn’t played as many matches this season because she was also trying to squeeze driver’s education into her schedule. In singles play, she has a good shot at a state berth.

“The matches we lost went to three sets against Libby, including a tiebreaker, so with some tweaking, hopefully we can pull those out in divisionals,” coach Jerry Smalley said.

Overall, Smalley said, “These girls have been one of the nicest groups of girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Their tennis skills have improved markedly this year, and we’re looking forward to representing Columbia Falls well at divisionals.”

On the boys side, Gary Yee said the Wildcats’ No. 1 doubles team of Andrew West and Mason Gedlaman can make it to state, but the boys have faltered as of late.

“They have what it takes,” he said. “They just have to bring it to the match.”

Caleb Baumann in singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Thelan and Casey Burgduff could also make a run.

The matches start Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Flathead Valley Community College campus and then transition to The Summit if it rains.
